The song “Amalanga Awafani” was released on streaming platforms on Tuesday, however not all featured artists, including DJ Maphorisa and TO Starquality, were properly recognized, including vocalist Samthing Soweto.
After a full day of internet backlash from fans, Samthing Soweto was added to the credits of Mas Musiq and Lawd Weezy’s song “Amalanga Awafani”.
When the news of the release was announced, Samthing Soweto replied with a heartbroken emoji because his name and image were not included in the credits or song art cover.
The heartbroken emoji sparked outrage among fans online since Samthing Soweto’s voice were utilized in the song but he was not recognized. This brought up the always-hot question of music rights.
Samthing Soweto has yet to respond to popular support for not receiving credit for the song.
The song’s release was apparently delayed because Samthing Soweto demanded a piece of the master and ownership rights.
“People should learn to share masters. When fans contacted Samthing Soweto about the song’s release date in July, he stated, “We don’t work for each other; we work together.”
As the public weighed in on the discussion, DJ Maphorisa went live on Instagram to express his frustration with Samthing Soweto’s delay in releasing the song due to his requests, as well as their decision to release the music without crediting Samthing Soweto.
DJ Maphorisa spit fury, telling supporters to stick with their “sh*** Samthing Soweto” and calling him “not business minded”.
“Stay with him and his sh*tty attitude; we’ll see who he works with since he ruins things wherever he goes.
“He’s like Sir Trill; they grow bad potatoes and wreck everything wherever they go. They know nothing since they are not business-oriented.”
