The South African government congratulates Dr. John Kani, a distinguished actor, director, and playwright, on receiving the Order of the British Empire (OBE) from His Majesty King Charles III.
Dr Kani’s award for “services to drama” recognizes his outstanding achievements to the arts in South Africa and beyond the world.
The Order of the British Empire is one of the most highest honors bestowed by the United Kingdom. It recognizes persons for extraordinary achievements and service in a variety of professions, including the arts, sciences, charity work, and public duty.
Kani views this accolade as a reflection of his lifelong dedication to the arts and his unflinching pursuit of cultural expression via drama.
Kani began his acting career in the 1960s, during the period of white minority rule in South Africa. Kani and fellow performer Winston Ntshona won a Tony Award in 1975 for their New York performance of Fugard’s 1972 drama “Sizwe Banzi is Dead”.
He played the wise mandrill Rafiki in the 2019 adaptation of “The Lion King” in recent years. He portrayed T’Chaka in Marvel Studios’ superhero flicks “Captain America: Civil War” (2016) and “Black Panther” (2018).
It was my honour to present Dr John Kani with an honorary OBE awarded by HM King Charles for “services to drama” in recognition of his work that has inspired and united so many around the world for so many decades.
