Police in the Western Cape have arrested two women for allegedly murdering their children.
In the first case, a 39-year-old Oudtshoorn mother was detained after reportedly strangling her seven-year-old son.
Police were called to a home on Korhaan Avenue in Bridgeton and discovered the small boy’s lifeless body.
“Paramedics later confirmed him dead at the site. Sergeant Christopher Spies, the police spokeswoman, stated that the inquest docket was initially opened for further inquiry.
“However, a post-mortem revealed that the victim died from strangulation. The docket was then amended to murder.
He said authorities apprehended the child’s mother a few days later, and she has now appeared in court on murder charges.
She is due to return to the Oudtshoorn Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday after the matter was postponed to allow her to seek legal representation.
In the second occurrence, a mother who recently gave birth was arrested after a newborn’s body was discovered on the N2 highway opposite Kwanokuthula.
“Medical personnel on the spot declared the three-day-old dead. “The woman was apprehended at Kwanokuthula and charged with murder,” Spies stated.
He stated that the 23-year-old woman was scheduled to appear in court on Monday at the Plettenberg Bay Magistrate’s Court.
“The investigation into both concerns continues. Western Cape police management applauded the investigators for their diligence in bringing these individuals to justice,” Spies said.
