Mother and Son Appear in Court for Murder of Husband

A 36-year-old mother and her 19-year-old son appeared in Moretele Magistrate’s Court today, accused of murdering her husband.

On Monday, September 2, Refilwe Molekoa and her son, Goitsemang Madibela, appeared in court after being held at their home in Maubane hamlet, near Makapanstad in the North West.

Lieutenant Colonel Amanda Funani, a police spokesperson, stated that Lucas Molekoa, 63, and his stepson were watching soccer on television on Sunday, August 25, 2024, when an altercation broke out.

“It is claimed that the disagreement turned physical, and the mother attempted to separate the two, but she failed. Funani claims that when she realized her husband was overwhelming her son, she whacked him on the head with an item, causing him to fall.

The mother and her son allegedly strangled the spouse with a rope before rushing outside to report a house robbery.

“Police were summoned, and the two suspects, a mom and her son, were taken in for questioning. The two was eventually charged with murder after it was discovered that they allegedly killed the victim,” Funani added.

The accused have been remanded in detention until Friday, September 13, 2024, to file bail applications.

Lieutenant General Sello Kwena, the North West police commissioner, congratulated Makapanstad police for their prompt response and thorough investigations, which resulted in the couple being detained and prosecuted to the fullest extent possible.
