A 21-year-old Sandton student has been detained in connection with the rape and murder of Johannesburg educator Kirsten Kluyts.

According to police, the individual was tracked with the assistance of a security firm, 24/7 Security Management.

At 16:00 on Sunday, the individual was apprehended at a student’s house.

Lieutenant-General Elias Mawela, the police commissioner of Gauteng, praised the officers who were able to “crack the murder case.”

Kluyts was participating in the Sandton Sports Club’s weekly MyRun event on October 29 when she was attacked, pulled down a bank, raped, and murdered.

After failing to arrive at the finish line at 09:00, concerned racers discovered her dead at 09:30.

According to News24, the individual was monitored since he was seen wearing Kluyts’ blue T-shirt as he exited the sports complex.

The club in Parkmore, Sandton, is encircled by CCTV cameras, which police used to hunt the man down.

He will appear in the Alexandra Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday.
