Tyla Teaches US Radio Hosts A Few SA Phrases

Tyla has taken the United States by storm, garnering substantial media attention and numerous honors such as a Grammy nomination and chart success.

With her growing recognition comes public interest in both her personality and her South African heritage.

Tyla spoke with the Los Angeles-based radio show The Cruz Show on Real 92.3 on a variety of topics, including the success of her hit song Water, things she dislikes, and SA slang.

J Cruz, Jackie Ramirez, Lechero, and Jeff ‘The Sports Dude’ Garcia present the show.

When asked to offer some South African lingo, she did so while attempting to make things family-friendly by avoiding swear words and improper phrases. One of the hosts joked that she needed “bad words,” to which she responded, “No, I can’t say bad words.”

“I don’t really like to say American slang. It doesn’t sit well with me… I have my own slang from South Africa,” Tyla said.

When she was asked the SA equivalent of the US slang term “fire”, which denotes something cool, she replied, “We make a lot of sounds in South Africa like, ‘yoh!'”

She also shared the word ‘bathong’ with them, which expresses disbelief, surprise or dissatisfaction. She even complimented one of the hosts for saying it right on the first try.

Later in the interview, one of the hosts shared SA slang they had learned themselves. Tyla was delightfully surprised when the co-host used words like ‘yebo’ and ‘tekkies’.

When the word ‘voetsek’ was mentioned, Tyla warned the hosts that it was a bad word.

“Voetsek, that’s bad, it’s like F-off,” she said.

Tyla also talked about her initial desire when she was younger to make the type of music she is making now.

“I’ve always wanted to make music that’s a fusion between African music and Western pop and R&B because I grew up with that being my influence,” the singer said.

She also shared that she is feeling homesick during her time overseas. “I’m very close to my family, so being away for so long is not easy, but they understand, and I mean, you got to do what you got to do you.”
