Eskom has announced that power disruptions will be implemented in certain districts of Soweto, Johannesburg, on Wednesday.
The electricity company stated that planned work will take place from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. in Dobsonville Extensions 1, 2, 4, 5, 7, and old Dobsonville.
“The interruption in electricity supply is necessary to perform essential maintenance on our distribution power lines,” according to an Eskom statement.
In addition, Eskom announced that it will be performing maintenance in Cosmo City on Thursday, resulting in another nine-hour power outage.
The outage will affect residents of Extension 6.
“In the interest of safety, customers are advised to treat all electrical appliances as live during the power supply outage,” the utility stated.
On Monday, South African Minister of Electricity and Energy, Dr. Kgosientsho Ramokgopa, stated that despite 138 days of no load shedding, the energy crisis is still ongoing.
He stated that while the government remains “buoyant” about Eskom’s performance, load shedding has not been eliminated.
“I’d want to emphasize that load shedding is not behind us. Eskom will provide an update on the summer outlook over the next three weeks. “We remain optimistic about the performance of these generation plants,” he said.
“Having said that, we must exercise prudence before declaring that load shedding is no longer necessary. We are doing everything we can to settle this question, but the data show that we are getting close,” Ramokgopa suggested.
