Eskom Urges Prepaid Users to Recode Meters by November or Risk Power Disconnection

Eskom, South Africa’s electricity generator, urges prepaid electricity users to recode their meters by the November deadline set by the Standard Transfer Specification Association (STSA).

According to a statement from Eskom, prepaid electricity users must recode their meters by November 24, 2024.

Eskom has announced that after the deadline, electricity tokens will not be accepted unless they are upgraded to Key Revision Number (KRN) 2. There will be no extension of the November 2024 deadline for updating the Token Identifier (TID).

The process of recoding will affect around 6.9 million prepaid meters in Eskom-supplied areas.

Prepaid customers who fail to recode their meters by the deadline will be unable to load electricity tokens, rendering their meters useless.

“Eskom has already prepared 97% of the meters by pre-coding them, making it simple for customers to complete the process themselves,” the company noted.

According to Eskom, the Do-It-Yourself approach requires customers to purchase credit tokens from licensed merchants and then enter two sets of 20-digit codes into their meters to update them.

The electricity generator stated that they are stepping up their awareness campaign to guarantee that all customers are informed. Eskom is also urging individuals who have not yet recoded their meters to act swiftly to avoid service disruptions.

“Eskom acknowledges individuals who have already finished the process and informs customers that support personnel are there to help. Customers in need of assistance can contact Eskom at 0860 037 566.

Eskom stated that they are committed to a smooth transition to KRN2 and providing uninterrupted service to all consumers.
