Mpumalanga police detained two males and a 61-year-old woman for allegedly possessing illegal goods in Hazyview on Friday.
Colonel Donald Mdhluli, the provincial police spokesperson, stated that the guys are between the ages of 30 and 35.
Mdhluli claimed that the arrest was carried out by members of the Tactical Response Team, K9 Unit, Public Order Policing, Flying Squad, Mounted Unit, Visible Policing, Police Bikers, and Detective Services.
He claimed the squad was conducting a compliance operation in Calcutta’s liquor stores when they received credible information from people about a truck suspected of smuggling contraband. He stated that investigators linked the information to a private house in Hazyview.
“Upon investigation, a substantial quantity of contraband items were discovered inside a large storage, valued at a street value of over R 2.5 million. It was during this time when the three suspects were cornered and when searching inside the premises, the team also discovered about 10 live ammunition,” he said.
He said the suspects are faced with charges of unlawful possession of ammunition, as well as possession of illicit goods.
The trio is currently in police custody pending their court appearance soon.
Meanwhile, the acting provincial police commissioner, Major General Zeph Mkhwanazi, said he appreciated the valuable information from members of the public.
“We are grateful to members of the community and together, we can create a safer environment for all. This discovery underscores the commitment to combating illegal trade and maintaining law and order in the province,’’ said Mkhwanazi.
