Cape Winelands Airport Aims to Launch Local and International Flights by 2027

The Cape Winelands Airport intends to begin operating local and international flights in 2027. The airport, located 13 kilometers northeast of Durbanville, is well-positioned to serve Cape Town’s aviation and tourism sectors.

The airport’s development plans integrate the region’s wine heritage, with vineyards as part of the scenery.

The site will also have open areas including a plaza, a hotel, a conference center, a wine-tasting experience, an outdoor amphitheatre for events, an aircraft museum, and at-grade parking.

A portion of the controlled airside area will be set aside for a botanical garden with a diverse assortment of fynbos.

The complex will expand to include freight terminals, aircraft hangars, a hotel, a heliport, and warehousing and logistics facilities. Plans also call for a commercial real estate development.

Previously known as the Fisantekraal Airfield, the location was initially owned by the South African Air Force before becoming privately owned in 1993.

In November 2020, private investors purchased the Cape Winelands Airport, which is now owned and operated by RSA.Aero.

Currently, the Cape Winelands Airport serves as a general aviation site and a flight training center in the Cape Town area.

The airport has previously planned a R7 billion refurbishment and extension proposal to convert it into an international commercial airport.

The first phase of development is enlarging and realigning the principal runway to 3,500 metres. The airport now has four runways, two of which are inactive, with the others measuring 700 and 900 metres in length.

The expansion plans also call for the construction of a passenger terminal capable of accommodating 5 million passengers per year, with projections of 2 million international tourists and 3 million domestic travelers per year by 2050, potentially increasing the region’s annual passenger traffic from 10 to 20 million.

Construction on the airport’s expansion is planned to begin early next year, subject all necessary clearances.
