Beware of Tax Scams as Sars Tax Season Deadline Draws Near

As South Africa’s tax season ends on October 21, 2024, the South African Revenue Service (Sars) warns taxpayers about a new tax scam.

Sars has made a statement stating that the most recent scam involves sending taxpayers an email telling them of an outstanding payment owed to the organization.

The email reads: “We have identified that you have an overdue payment of R1,420 which is required to be settle immediately.”

The email urges taxpayers to settle the outstanding payment by putting a payment into a bank account using the banking information provided in the email.

The email will include banking information such as the payment reference, account name, and amount to be paid.

Last week, Sars alerted taxpayers and companies about scammers who were impersonating Sars staff and sending them emails.

Sars stated that the emails include an attachment with a link to’settle an overdue balance or debt’.

The name and contact information of a Sars employee would appear in the email signature, but taxpayers should note that the email domain is different.
