Top TV shows ‘Shaka iLembe’, ‘The River’ and ‘Gqhebera: The Empire’ dominate SAFTAs18 nominees

The National Film and Video Foundation (NFVF) has announced the nominations for the 18th Annual South African Film and Television Awards (SAFTA18).

Tshedza Pictures, owned by Gwydion Beynon and Phathutshedzo Makwarela, has been dominating Mzansi screens and leads the field in terms of production house achievements, with 29 nominations for films like as “Outlaws” and “Gqeberha – The Empire”.

“The River” received 11 nominations for its sixth and final season, which aired in February. Sindi Dlathu, the telenovela’s lead actress and executive producer, has received two nominations for The River, making her a nominee in all six seasons.

Tshepo, Katleho, and Rethabile Ramaphakela’s Burnt Onion Productions received 22 nominations for projects including “Miseducation” (10 nominations) and “Entangled” (3 nominations).

Five of Burnt Onion’s nominations are shared with Seriti Films for the telenovela Redemption.

Desiree Markgraaff, Angus Gibson, and the late Teboho Mahlatsi’s Bomb Shelter Film Company got 20 nominations, 17 for “Shaka iLembe,” including Best Actress in a TV Drama for Nomzamo Mbatha and Best Supporting Actor in a Drama for Wiseman Mncube and Senzokuhle Radebe.

Thembinkosi Mthembu, who also stars in acclaimed series, garnered four nominations: Best Actor in a Drama for both “Shaka iLembe” and “Adulting”, Best Actor in a Telenovela for “Outlaws”, and Best Supporting Actor for “The River”.

SABC 1’s top soapie “Skeem Saam” garnered seven nominations, BBZEE Films received ten for Yoh! Christmas, and Hela Media received six for the soap/telenovela “1802: Love Defies Time”.

Orange Films and Star Films’ “Rise: The Siya Kolisi Story” garnered three nominations, while Rose & Oaks Media received two for “The Masked Singer”.

Weil Entertainment’s popular pageant show “Crown Chasers” has received a nomination.

Ochre Media received 19 nominations for productions like “Lioness,” “Fatal Seductio,” and “Scandal!”

Mpho Sebeng, who passed away, was nominated for Best Supporting Actor in a Comedy and Telenovela.

This year’s SAFTAs mark a significant milestone by introducing five new categories. Best Achievement in Visual Effects (VFX) – TV or film, Best Achievement in Special Effects (SFX) in Hair and Make-Up – TV or film, Original songs for telenovelas, television dramas, and feature films.
