Waheed Hassan, the man who fired the shot that killed musician Taliep Peterson in 2006, has been released on parole.
Singabakho Nxumalo, spokeswoman for the Department of Correctional Services, stated that Hassan was freed on October 8, 2024, and that his parole restrictions would not be made public.
“Waheed Hassan was placed into the system of community corrections on Tuesday until his sentence expires in August 2033.”

Hassan was sentenced to an effective 25 years in jail in 2009 and served it at the Warm Bokkeveld jail in Ceres, Western Cape.
On the night of December 16, 2006, Taliep was slain with a single shot to the head after being tied up with wire ties in his Athlone house. The robbery was faked.
His wife, Najwa Peterson, the mastermind of the murder, was scheduled to be paroled in November of this year, but the decision is being reviewed, therefore her parole has been stopped.
She’s currently serving a 28-year term for her husband’s murder.

According to Department of Correctional Services Minister Pieter Greonewald, the decision has been forwarded to the Parole examine Board, which will now examine the original judgment or replace it with its own.
At the time of her parole placement date, the Department stated that Petersen had engaged in different rehabilitation programs and will be enrolled in pre-release programmes to prepare her for reintegration into society.
According to Groenewald, the decision was reviewed after Taliep’s family expressed concerns.
