Adrian Gore, a South African insurance tycoon and co-founder of Discovery, has risen to become one of the country’s top corporate leaders. His 7.19 percent holding, or 48.3 million shares, in the Sandton-based insurer is now worth about $500 million, according to stock gains on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE).
Adrian Gore, one of South Africa’s wealthiest executives, owns 7.19 percent of Discovery. In the previous 37 days, the value of his shareholding has soared by R1.38 billion ($78.72 million) as the stock has surged.
Discovery’s shares have risen 16.5 percent in the last 37 days, from R148.46 ($243.81) on September 11 to R177.09 ($284.05). As a result, Gore’s ownership increased from R7.18 billion ($408.25 million) to R8.56 billion ($486.98 million), representing a $78.73 million increase in value during the period.
Discovery, founded in 1992 by Gore and Barry Swartzberg, started with medical insurance and now provides long-term and short-term insurance, asset management, and investment services.
Discovery’s shares has risen 28.9 percent this year, outperforming peers and expanding its position in South Africa’s insurance market. A $100,000 investment at the beginning of the year would now be worth $128,915, resulting in a $28,915 profit.
