PSL Player Shaun Mogaila Surrenders to Police After Fleeing the Scene of a Fatal Crash

A PSL soccer star’s vehicle was found with suspected cocaine, edibles, and expensive Don Julio tequila bottles following a deadly crash that killed a 9-year-old girl and injured a 13-year-old boy on Wednesday morning.

Authorities identified the footballer as Shaun Mogaila of Sekhukhune United, who plays as a right back and right winger. The footballer joined the Limpopo team from Shauwn Mkhize’s Royal AM during the transfer season, and he had been linked with a move to one of the Soweto giants.

Mogaila started at right back as his club defeated Richards Bay FC 2-0 on Tuesday night at the Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane, Limpopo.

On Wednesday afternoon, Ekurhuleni Metro Police spokesperson Thabiso Makgato confirmed that Mogaila surrendered to officers at the Rabie Ridge Police Station near Midrand after the deadly crash on the Andrew Mapheto Road in Thembisa at 7.30am.

Makgato told HowSouth that the children were being driven to school by the nine-year-old’s mother when the i10 Grand Hyundai crashed with the soccer player’s BMW.

“A female driver was transporting her nine-year-old daughter who succumbed to injuries and was declared dead on scene, and a 13-year-old who sustained serious injuries and was transported to Thembisa Tertiary Hospital,” Makgato said.

She said the driver of the other vehicle, believed to be Mogaila, fled the scene.

Earlier in the day, she said the status of the soccer player who had earlier not been named, was based on the verification of the vehicle records.

Makgato said the Metro Police found four bottles of Don Julio tequilla in the man’s BMW.

“A powder which we suspect could be ‘cocaine’ and weed ‘edibles’ were also found in his vehicle,” she said.

Makgato said a case of culpable homicide, reckless and negligent driving and fleeing the scene of an accident has been opened at Thembisa police station.

He is expected to appear in court soon.
