Mthandazo Gatya Celebrates His 14 Years of Sobriety

If you’re struggling to complete the Ocsober challenge, check out the inspiring story of “Senzeni” hitmaker Mthandazo Gatya, who has remained sober for 14 years after starting drinking in Grade 9.

In an interview with the Daily Sun, Gatya stated that drinking had become a habit for him.

“Drinking felt like a cycle I wanted to break because so many individuals in my family had lost everything because to alcohol. Including my father.

“In Grade 9, I was already drinking heavily because there was a tavern at home and there was alcohol everywhere,” according to him.

The 37-year-old musician revealed that he left alcohol intentionally because he believed that his alcoholism would define his destiny, so he took a deliberate decision to quit.

“At the time when I decided to quit, nothing bad had happened, it was just a conscious decision, and I was ready to go through with it,” added the comedian.

Mthandazo also offered advise to others who want to begin their sobriety journey: “It looks different for everyone.” But all I can say is that drinking cannot make you happy. That’s where things go wrong.”

Even while alcohol can make you feel more calm, less stressed, and confident, it is critical to understand when to stop abusing alcohol because you will most likely become unwell.

According to a study conducted by the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, drinking disrupts the brain’s communication networks, making it difficult to think properly and move with coordination.

It harms the heart, resulting in heart conditions such as stroke or high blood pressure.

Long-term drinking also has a significant impact on the liver, potentially leading to liver inflammations such as cirrhosis, fibrosis, and alcoholic hepatitis.
