Mpumalanga police detained a 25-year-old guy inside a hospital where he was accompanying a minor victim, a 17-year-old girl who later died there.
Colonel Donald Mdhluli, a provincial police spokesperson, stated that law enforcement agencies were notified of an incident in which a “badly assaulted” girl was brought to the hospital by her family members and a “friend”.
“On arrival at the hospital, members of the police were led to a bed where a lifeless body of the teenage girl was laying motionless. The victim sustained multiple injuries and police made some investigation and learned that a male friend to the victim was somehow fingered,” said Mdhluli.
“It was during this time when they arrested the suspect who is expected to appear at the Bushbuckridge Magistrate’s Court soon.”
Police claimed the motivation for the violent attack has yet to be determined.
Meanwhile, Major General Zeph Mkhwanazi, the acting provincial commissioner of police in Mpumalanga, has welcomed the arrest of the 25-year-old man.
Mkhwanazi also denounced the “senseless murder” of the teenage girl.
