For disruptive snow, a Level 5 warning has been issued for the Western Cape. The Northern Cape has also received a warning over the same.

Disruptive snowfall is anticipated throughout the province’s Central and Little Karoo highlands, as well as the Cape Winelands, Cederberg, Stellenbosch, Paarl, and Central ranges, according to the South African Weather Service (Saws).

“The closure of the following mountain passes are likely; Swartberg, Franschhoek, Hex River, Ouberg and Katbakkies. Snowfall accumulation of between five to 10cm is expected with possible low-level or ground snowfall especially over southern high ground of the Northern Cape and the Cape Winelands,” Saws said.

It also mentioned the chance of a 20-cm snowfall accumulation across the Matroosberg mountain range. It is anticipated that the weather may affect susceptible cattle and cause traffic jams.

Teams responsible for managing disasters at the provincial level should be ready.

In the meantime, MEC for Transport and Human Settlements Siboniso Duma has asked drivers to reschedule or postpone their travels in preparation for any eventuality as KwaZulu-Natal braces for significant downpours and snowfall.

Response teams are kept on high alert at certain areas, according to the MEC, to help in case of an emergency.
