Lawyer Accused of Pocketing R10 Million from Road Accident Fund Payout

Former attorney Michael Senotse Mabunda, 42, appeared in court on an allegation of fraud involving Road Accident Fund (RAF) reimbursements.

In August 2019, Mabunda received a summons in connection with a fraud case registered at the Pretoria North police station.

According to HowSouth, Mabunda was consequently barred from practicing law by the Legal Practice Council.

Captain Lloyd Ramovha, a spokesperson for the Gauteng Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation, better known as the Hawks, stated that they conducted an investigation after Mabunda allegedly deceived his clients.

“It was reported that Mr Mabunda, who was an attorney, lodged claims with the Road Accident Fund on behalf of his clients,” said Ramovha.

“The Road Accident Fund paid an amount of R10,562,173 into his trust account. However, Mr Mabunda allegedly never transferred these funds to his clients, resulting in significant financial losses.”

Mabunda made his first appearance before the Pretoria Specialised Commercial Crimes Court on Tuesday.

Ramovha stated that the case was postponed until November 26 for further procedures.

Meanwhile, Major General Ebrahim Kadwa, the provincial head of the Hawks in Gauteng, has hailed Mabunda’s arrest.
