KZN Transport MEC Urges Stronger Road Safety Efforts Following Fatal Head-On Crash Killing Six

The KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Transport and Human Settlements has called for increased road safety campaigns in October following the deaths of six people in a crash on the R102 in Darnall, northern KwaZulu-Natal, over the weekend.

MEC Siboniso Duma stated that a team from the Road Traffic Inspectorate is collaborating with the South African Police Service (SAPS) to determine the cause of the two-car head collision that happened Saturday night.

“Preliminary investigation indicates that two vehicles collided head-on at high speed,” stated the man.

According to IPSS Medical Rescue, when rescue teams arrived on the scene, they discovered five persons dead and others with moderate to serious injuries.

“All patients were stabilised on scene by EMRS and IPSS Medical Rescue before being transported to hospital under the care of Advanced Life Support paramedics,” said Kelsey-Jae Meyrick, an IPSS Medical Rescue representative.

A sixth individual died a short time later.
