KZN Braces for Severe Thunderstorms

Following a South African Weather Service (Saws) warning for severe thunderstorms throughout the areas of Zululand, Uthukela, uMzinyathi, Amajuba, and uMgungundlovu, disaster management teams have been deployed to locations in northern and western KwaZulu-Natal.

It is predicted that these strong thunderstorms would bring hail, strong gusts, and a lot of lighting. It is highly recommended that residents in the impacted areas take the appropriate safety measures to shield themselves and their family from these potentially dangerous weather conditions.

“Localized damage to vehicles, settlements, infrastructure, livelihoods, and livestock may result from the storms.” Additionally, lightning can inflict power surges brought on by an abundance of lightning, as well as localized injuries and even death,” stated Rev. Thulasizwe Buthelezi, MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta).

According to him, personnel will continue to monitor weather trends and stay on high alert, particularly in places where catastrophes are likely to occur.

Affected areas:

•Abaqulusi

•Alfred Duma (Indaka and Ladysmith)

•Dannhauser

•eDumbe

•eMadlangeni

•Endumeni

•Impendle

•Inkosi Langalibalele (Escourt and Sobabili)

•Mpofana (Giants Castle and Mooi River)

•Msinga

•Newcastle

•Nkandla

•Nquthu

•Okhahlamba

•Msunduzi

•Ulundi

•uMngeni

•uMshwathi

“Scattered showers and thundershowers are expected over parts of KZN, otherwise isolated. Potentially severe thunderstorms are expected over the north western parts with damaging winds, excessive lightning and hail,” Saws said.

The forecaster said the weather will have an impact on localised damage to infrastructure, settlements, vehicles and livestock.

Saws added that it could also impact localised injuries and danger to life due to lightning and possibly cause power surges.
