Applications are invited for a fully funded PhD studentship. The student will be supervised jointly by Prof David Aikman (Director, Qatar Centre for Global Banking and Finance at King’s Business School) and Prof Teemu Pennanen (Professor of Financial Mathematics, Probability and Statistics at King’s Department of Mathematics).
Project Description
This studentship is open to candidates who wish to pursue a PhD in the area of climate finance. We are open to project proposals on any topic in this area, but areas of particular interest include:
- Asset pricing and physical and transition risks of climate change
- Carbon offset and allowance markets
- Efficient power network auction mechanisms with renewable power generation
- Stranded assets
- The macroeconomic implications of climate change
- The impact of climate-related disclosures, greenwashing
- The application of data analytics (big data, text analysis, machine learning) to these issues
- Econometric modelling of climate finance related risk factors
Candidates should have a strong quantitative background, with an undergraduate or graduate degree in Finance, Economics, Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, Engineering, or similar. Knowledge of statistical software (such as SAS, Stata) or computer programming languages (such as Python, C/C++, Matlab) would be advantageous.
About the Qatar Centre for Global Banking and Finance
The Qatar Centre for Global Banking & Finance is a research centre dedicated to the study of central banks and the challenges they face in the global environment. It aims to develop cutting-edge research in all areas of central bank policymaking, ranging from monetary policy to financial stability and regulation.
The candidate will join the PhD programme at KBS, which provides strong computational and research training, in preparation for a career in academia, the finance industry and central banking. The programme includes PhD courses and the writing of a PhD thesis.

Academic requirements:
- Satisfy the entry requirements of the King’s Business School PhD programme – Master’s degree with a Merit and a Bachelor’s degree with 2:1 in a quantitative subject. International applicants can check the equivalence of their degrees here.
The studentship covers:
