A man who had been hijacked and thrown into the trunk of his vehicle was able to crawl to safety after suspects smashed his white VW Polo while fleeing police.
Police officers were patrolling Mahambahlala when they noticed the vehicle going through one of the town’s side streets.
“Officers attempted to stop the vehicle on Seyisi Street, but when the occupants saw the officers, they sped away,” said Eastern Cape police spokesperson Captain Sandra Janse Van Rensburg.
She claimed police called for backup, and a high-speed chase followed.
Janse van Rensburg stated that as the Polo neared a traffic circle on Mavuso Street, the driver lost control and smashed into a wall.
Suspects exited the vehicle and fired at cops.
“Officers arrested one suspect with a firearm in his possession as well as the driver who was stuck in the crashed vehicle,” according to Janse van Rensburg.
She claimed that while police officers were occupied on the site, they heard noises coming from the boot.
“Upon further investigation, an unknown man crawled his way from the boot through the back seats and informed the members that he was hijacked,” she told me.
The two suspects were charged with hijacking, kidnapping, and possessing an unlawful pistol and ammunition.
Both are set to appear in New Brighton Magistrate’s Court.
