On Thursday afternoon, a Gauteng Department of Education official escaped an attempted assassination in Johannesburg’s south.
After being brought to the hospital, the official was in stable condition, according to department spokesperson Steve Mabona.
Mabona stated that the unnamed official was from the Johannesburg South District and was in charge of learning and teaching support material (LTSM).
“Immediate medical attention was provided, and we are relieved to report that the official is currently in a stable condition and receiving medical attention at a local facility.
“We extend our heartfelt wishes for the speedy recovery of our colleague and assure the family that we will provide the necessary support during this challenging time,” Mabona said.
News24 got photographs of the crime scene, which show a bloodied guy sitting in his car in the middle of the road. The driver’s side of the vehicle had bullet holes evident.
The incident occurred near the Southgate Mall on Chris Hani Road and Golden Highway in the city’s south.
Matome Chiloane, MEC for Education in Gauteng, called the occurrence as “worrying.”
“While the motive is unknown, it is worrisome that an official can be targeted and shot at in that manner.
“We wish to call upon law enforcement agencies to bring the perpetrators to book. Anyone with information regarding this incident is encouraged to share it with the police. We wish our employee a speedy recovery,” Chiloane said.
