The Royal Northern College of Music is recognised as one of the most progressive and forward-thinking conservatoires in the world, with a central commitment to new and contemporary music dating back to its opening in 1973. The College is seeking to appoint an inspiring and collaborative Head of Composition to lead the School in its next phase after its 50th celebrations this year. The School is very diverse with over 40 students and 11 staff and is recognised internationally for the quality of its staff and students, and for the success of its alumni within the industry.
Applicants for this role should be recognised internationally in the field of composition, with an extensive range of professional connections and experiences, and have a broad knowledge and relevant experience of conservatoire education, pedagogy and research. The role holder will assist with the development of the College’s partnerships with world-renowned ensembles and composers, finding creative and collaborative ways to build the range of training opportunities for students which supports their transition into the music profession.
Reporting to the Deputy Principal (Performance and Programmes), you will have a genuine commitment to contributing to the RNCM’s ambitious strategy to define the future of music. You will make a significant contribution in the development of the College in its learning and teaching, and the activity of its artistic offer, as well as being able to teach at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels, assisting in the coordination and development of the work of a world-leading department. Creative and supportive with a broad musical outlook, and the ability to work with a very diverse range of staff and students, applicants must have a genuine commitment to equality and diversity, and a strong knowledge of current trends in the profession and world of higher education.
