Seven of the eight people who died in the N2 horrific crash on Friday morning were high school students.
The accident occurred near Mandeni, and both directions of the N2 highway have been closed to traffic.
The youngsters were being transported in a Toyota Avanza when they struck head-on with a truck traveling in the opposite direction.
The driver is likely to have also died.
According to Samantha Meyrick of IPSS Medical Rescue, they arrived at the scene to see complete carnage.
“There was a horrific head-on collision between a vehicle carrying children and a truck.”
She stated that eight persons have been confirmed dead, including six high school students.
The truck driver has been badly hurt.
“SAPS Search and Rescue are on scene, they have not confirmed if all occupants of the light motor vehicle are accounted for.”
Siboniso Duma, the KZN MEC for Transport, is on his way to the scene.
