On Saturday, two passengers died in separate instances at Gauteng’s OR Tambo International Airport and Durban’s King Shaka Airport.
According to a statement from Airports Company South Africa (Acsa), the first incident occurred at 3pm when officials at OR Tambo International Airport got a complaint that a person had fallen from parking Level 5 to the ground level.
Acsa spokesperson Ernest Mulibana stated that law police and airport health professionals stationed at the 24-hour clinic were immediately notified of the situation.
“Paramedics later arrived and declared the unidentified traveller dead on the scene.”
In the second occurrence, Acsa stated that an unidentified male passenger collapsed and died at King Shaka International Airport.
The event occurred at the airport’s domestic arrival terminal section.
“Emergency services were immediately called and attended to him, but he was unfortunately declared dead on the scene.”
Mulibana stated that the cause of death in both cases is yet unknown.
“We can confirm that the matter has been handed over to the South African Police Service (SAPS) and that an inquest docket has been opened for further investigations.”
Mulibana said Acsa sends its heartfelt sympathies to the families and loved ones of both travelers during this difficult period.
In June of this year, a woman died at King Shaka International Airport (KSIA) just before boarding an aircraft to Johannesburg.
“Acsa can confirm that a call was reported at 8.35pm to the call centre requesting an emergency medical response after a traveller was observed to be struggling to breathe at gate A12 of the airport terminal.”
