An assistant manager at an Eastern Cape shopping mall has been convicted of fraud totaling more than R700,000.
Rosslyn Moodley, 43, was found guilty at the East London Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday.
According to the Directorate for Priority Crimes Investigation (known as the Hawks), Moodley was detained on February 13, 2023.
Eastern Cape Hawks spokeswoman Captain Yolisa Mgolodela said the fraud occurred over two years.
“Moodley worked as the Assistant Manager at Hemmingway’s Mall, in the centre management office.
“Between 2018 and 2020, she created several bogus “gift card vouchers” for personal gain.
“The matter was formally lodged with the East London based serious commercial crime investigation (unit) of the Hawks for a thorough probe.”
According to the Hawks, the inquiry indicated that Moodley cheated the centre out of more than R720,000 in cash.
She stated that Moodley was freed on a caution after her arrest.
Mgolodela stated that Moodley was eventually convicted after making multiple court appearances during her trial.
The case has been postponed until October 14, 2024 for a probation officer’s report.
Major General Mboiki Obed Ngwenya, the head of the Hawks in the Eastern Cape, praised the teams for ensuring Moodley’s conviction and called for a sentence equal to the crime.
