This week, a former Standard Bank employee appeared in court after allegedly pocketing more than R500,000 allocated for Automated Teller Machines.
The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) announced that Bongani Vincent Nkosi, 37, appeared before the Specialised Commercial Crimes Court in Ga-Rankuwa, North West.
The case has been postponed until November 22nd for decision.
According to NPA spokeswoman Sivenathi Gunya, Nkosi faces two theft charges.
Gunya explained the merits of the case, stating that the accused worked for Standard Bank in Mabopane.
“His responsibilities included loading cash into six automated teller machines, managing customer automated teller machines, and withdrawing cash from customer deposits made at automated teller machines.”
“It is alleged that on February 3, 2017, the accused was asked to put R630,000 into Standard Bank’s automated teller machine.
“Investigations revealed that he only loaded an amount of R70, 000.”
According to Gunya, Nkosi was arrested in July 2018 after allegedly stealing the remaining R560,000.
He’s out on R5,000 bail.
According to the NPA, the State sought the court to reject Nkosi’s claim that he was threatened with stealing R1 million.
“The accused claimed that he was accosted and kidnapped by unknown people who threatened to cause harm to him if didn’t steal an amount of R1 million from the bank and hand it to them.”
Gunya stated that the accused’s account was that he was kidnapped on February 2, 2017.
“He was then freed to go to work the next day, where he decided to carry out his plan to steal R 560,000.
“According to the accused, he drove to the place where he met his assailants and handed over the money to them.”
According to Gunya, Nkosi failed to disclose the incident to his manager or the bank.
“He failed to report the incident, even after the bank manager assigned him and two other bank officials to count the money in the vault.”
“It was found that there was a shortage, but the accused as a sole custodian of the vault could not even explain what happened to the money.”
According to the NPA, Nkosi failed to report the incident to the SAPS.
