2024 United States Institute For Peace (USIP) Peace Scholar Fellowship Program For International Students

The Peace Scholar Fellowship Program of the United States Institute For Peace (USIP) provides non-residential scholarships to students enrolled in U.S. universities who are writing PhD dissertations on issues broadly connected to conflict management, peacebuilding, and pertinent security studies.

Since 1988, the program has assisted 371 young researchers with their dissertations, many of whom have gone on to significant careers in research, higher education, and policymaking.

To support further fellowships, this initiative collaborates with the Minerva Research Initiative. Currently, the program provides up to 18 fellowships per year, with awards covering both the research and writing stages of dissertation preparation.

Value & Duration of Award:  $20,000

  • United State Institute for Peace (USIP) Peace Scholar Fellowship funds up to 18 Peace Scholars for a 10-month non-residential fellowship.
  • Peace Scholars receive stipends of up to $20,000 for the academic year, paid directly to the individual in three tranches. Peace Scholar awards may not be deferred.

Eligible Countries: All Countries

Eligibility: Doctoral candidates with high-quality, policy-relevant research that will expand our understanding of conflict management, peacebuilding, and other related security studies are encouraged to apply.Priority will be given to submissions that are directly related to USIP’s objectives and/or the Minerva Research Initiative’s research priorities.

How To Apply: Peace Scholars are required to participate in an annual workshop. When their dissertation is completed and approved by their committee, the Peace Scholar is required to submit a copy to USIP at PeaceScholarFellows@usip.org.

After completing the registration, applicants must prepare and submit a complete application in FLUXX. USIP does not provide status updates on submitted applications at any time.
