EFF individuals in Tshwane raged a gathering led by leader Solly Msimanga on Wednesday.
The Red Berets are requesting Msimanga fire the recently delegated head of staff Marietha Aucamp.
The EFF said Aucamp was appointed without qualifications.
The mayor, meanwhile, says he wants to set the record straight regarding media reports that he “participated in – and implicitly condoned the alleged flouting of the law to favour the appointment of the Chief of Staff in his office, Ms Marietha Aucamp.”
In a statement, Msimanga said a panel comprising himself, MMC for Corporate and Shared Services, Cilliers Brink, and former acting city manager Lindiwe Kwele, scored Aucamp highest out of all the applicants.
The mayor said the media reports that claimed Aucamp indicated that she has a B Tech degree were untrue. Msimanga said Aucamp never said she was in possession of any post-matric qualification because she does not have any.
Msimanga also explained that no tertiary qualifications are necessary to occupy the position.
“While it’s advantageous for the candidate to be in possession of the required qualification, it, however, doesn’t preclude a candidate in the political office to be considered for the position without having the relevant qualification, as what is required is experience and grasp of local government. As Chief Whip, Aucamp has the managerial experience of 16 years.
“The spokesperson for Msimanga, Samkelo Mgobozi, in response to a media enquiry from News24 mistakenly denied that Msimanga was involved in the selection process. At the time when he responded he wasn’t appraised of all the facts.
“The executive mayor has requested the city manager to conduct an urgent investigation into this matter and Aucamp has since been placed on special leave.”
