Former Police Minister, Fikile Mbalula has stepped down from his position as an ANC member of parliament.

ANC Chief Whip, Jackson Mthembu’s spokesperson, Nonceba Mhlauli confirmed his departure via a statement on Friday, stating that he has tabled his resignation on 26 February, the same day in which President Cyril Ramaphosa made his maiden cabinet reshuffle.

“The office of the ANC chief whip confirms that former minister of police, comrade Fikile Mbalula tendered his resignation as an ANC member of parliament in the national assembly,” Mhlauli said.

Mbalula was one of the casualties in the recent reshuffle, and was later deployed to Luthuli House where he took up the position of Head of Election in preparation for next year’s polls.

His position as Police Minister was taken by Bheki Cele, who returns to the portfolio for his second stint, having served as law enforcement chief between 2010 and 2012.

A firm favourite on Twitter, Mbalula’s resignation led to many speculating on what he will be doing with his free time since his departure from both Cabinet and Parliament.
