South African Athletes Nominated For IAAF’s World Athlete Of The Year

South African athletes, Caster Semenya, Luvo Manyonga and Wayde van Niekerk have been nominated for the 2017 IAAF World Athlete of the Year awards.

The trio is amongst a list of 10 athletes of 10 men and 10 women nominees who were selected by an international panel of athletics experts. The list is made up of representatives from all six continental areas of the IAAF.

Luvo Manyonga and Wayde van Niekerk are the two South African athletes amongst the male list while Caster Semenya is the only South African in the female list.

All the three athletes have shown outstanding performances in their respective fields.

Wayde van Niekerk holds the world 400m record while Semenya is the 800m champion.


Voting will be conducted through IAAF’s social media platforms and will close on 16 October. After the voting process, three men and three women finalists will be announced by the IAAF.

The awards will be held in Monaco in November.
