SA’s Most Sold, And Most Searched, Used Cars In 2019

The 2019 calendar year was yet another crackerjack year for the Volkswagen Polo and Toyota Hilux. In the used car market, the former was the most sold model, while the latter was the most searched for model in South Africa last year.

These findings are based on an analysis of AutoTrader data for the 2019. As the country’s largest automotive digital marketplace, car searches and sales via their platforms are a highly accurate barometer of consumer buying patterns.

According to George Mienie, AutoTrader CEO, the data is an effective proxy for the automotive market.

Mienie reveals that the Polo and Hilux are strong performers when it comes to both sales and search statistics, saying: “The Polo wasn’t only the most sold second-hand car, it was also the sixth most searched for used car in 2019. The Hilux, on the other hand, was the most searched for used car but also sold well, achieving a fourth place on the used car sales chart.”

C-Class and 3 Series

The Mercedes-Benz C-Class also featured strongly in both rankings. Mienie notes: “It was the second most searched for vehicle and the fifth most sold used vehicle in South Africa in 2019,” notes Mienie.

The C-Class’ arch-rival, the BMW 3 Series, was hot on its heels. This German luxury car was the third most searched for vehicle in 2019 and the sixth most sold.

Confirming the popularity of bakkies in this country, the Ford Ranger was also a top performer in 2019. Mienie says that the Ranger was the second most sold used vehicle and it was the fifth most searched for vehicle.

The iconic Volkswagen Golf fared well in 2019 too, being “the fourth most searched for vehicle and the eighth most sold,” according to Mienie.

Finally, a top performer in both the search and sales statistics was the Toyota Fortuner, which ended the year as the seventh most sold and eighth most searched for vehicle in 2019.

Volkswagen was the best performing manufacturer in the used market in 2019, with five appearances in the two lists (most sales and most searched for vehicles). The German automaker was followed by Toyota with four.
