Bookmakers are offering incredibly short odds on Joaquin Phoenix winning the Best Actor Oscar for his portrayal of the Joker.
The Academy Awards, better known as the Oscars, will hold their 92nd awards ceremony at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles on Sunday 9 February. South African audiences should note that the awards broadcast starts at 03:00 SAST on Monday 10 February.
Joaquin Phoenix is a lock for Best Actor Oscar
Phoenix won a Golden Globe Award for his work in the Todd Phillips directed film Joker.
Phillips himself is a longshot for the Best Director gong with Sam Mendes favoured for the award for helming 1917.
After winning the Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Motion Picture Drama, Phoenix bristled at being asked the same old questions about the film Joker.
“Isn’t this old news?” Phoenix asked a room full of reporters backstage at the Golden Globes in January.
“I feel like I’ve talked about this for six months. I mean, I feel like I answered these questions. Do you want to hear a different version? Should I try to change it a but, or what should I do?”
1917 tipped to win Best Picture
Joker is also nominated for the coveted Best Picture Oscar, but according to oddschecker.com the film is expected to lose out to Mendes’ World War I epic 1917. There is also stiff competition from South Korean thriller, Parasite and Quentin Tarantino brainchild Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.
In the Best Actor category, Phoenix will go up against Adam Driver (Marriage Story), Antonio Banderas (Pain and Glory), Jonathan Pryce (The Two Popes) and Leonardo DiCaprio, (Once Upon a Time in Hollywood). Phoenix has been nominated in the category twice before.
Fourth time lucky for Joaquin Phoenix at Oscars
Phoenix was first nominated for an Academy Award in the Best Supporting Actor category in 2001 for his performance as Commodus in Gladiator alongside Russell Crowe.
He was first nominated in the Best Supporting Actor category in 2006 for his portayal of music legend Johnny Cash in the biopic Walk the Line.
Phoenix not only won a Golden Globe for Joker but has also collected a Screen Actor’s Guild award for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role in a Motion Picture.
The odds on Phoenix winning the Best Actor awards are the shortest of any of the major awards.
In the Best Actress category, Renee Zelwegger (1/10) is also a near lock to scoop another Oscar for her depiction of Judy Garland in Judy.
