Ntsiki Mazwai Bans Hair Weaves In Her Music Videos

South African poet and musician, Ntsiki Mazwai has continued her war on weaves (a movement that was largely propelled by the late Bra-Hugh Masekela) by banning them from any of her music videos

Ntsiki Mazwai has proven to be a lot less controversial in recent months, and although this latest comment is unlikely to spark a full-on Twitter feud, we’re certain that it will have rubbed a few people up the wrong way.

It all began when she spoke about her upcoming new album, which has yet to be named but is one that she promises will be her most “mature” work yet. In an interview with Tshisa Live, she explained the album’s creative context:

“I am trying to empower black people with this album. Everyone I have worked with, from the artwork to the production, is from Soweto. Africans need to stand up for themselves and realise we can do things for ourselves”

The album will certainlay contain black-consciousness tones, many of which are related to image – something Ntsiki takes very seriously.

“I have a problem with white-affiliation meaning success, so part of my journey is to show the beauty of Africanness.”

And then came the weave comments:

“Celebrating women being their natural selves will do more for the African child than anything else. We need to stop people aspiring to wear weaves and aspire to wear their hair naturally. These themes, and themes of black consciousness and love, come through in the album.”

This isn’t the first time Ntsiki has had an issue with weaves

In 2018 alone she’s already commented on the hairstyle several times on social media
