It’s been one year since Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters was crowned Miss South Africa, and what a rollercoaster ride it has been!
The beauty queen took a trip down memory lane on Instagram.
“Today is a very special day to me. It marks one year since I was crowned @official_misssa and four months of being @missuniverse. The journey of a thousand miles start with one single step. Never underestimate how much can happen in one year (sic),” she wrote on Tuesday.
The past 12 months have been filled with big milestones, but the year was not without its challenges.
Demi-Leigh’s road to worldwide fame began the night she won the Miss SA title in March 2017. The Western Cape beauty was instantly labelled an early favourite to win the Miss World or Miss Universe title. Some compared her to Rolene Strauss, a Miss SA winner who went on to claim the Miss World title.
To everyone asking about the gloves, I truly hope that you'll hear my heart and understand that it came from a place of wanting to do good. pic.twitter.com/Pl5amM2gEM

A gamble paid off for Demi-Leigh when she decided to enter Miss Universe instead of Miss World. The pageants took place round about the same time, and Demi decided she had a better chance at winning the Miss Universe title. She was right!
Demi was crowned Miss Universe in November and continues to fly South Africa’s flag around the world.
Demi moved into a fancy apartment in New York shortly after her crowning. The city would serve as her base throughout her reign as Miss Universe. She was invited to A-list events such as New York Fashion Week, the Golden Globes and the Super Bowl.
Press from all over the world could not get enough of our girl Demi, who is always in demand for interviews.
Demi settled into life in the USA, but there is no place like home. She returned to SA in January – nearly two months after her crowning. Demi received a warm welcome with scores of people greeting her when she landed at O.R. Tambo Airport. She also visited Sedgefield, her home town in Cape Town.
“I am so overwhelmed by all the love that I’m receiving. I love sharing this joyous moment with you South Africa,” she wrote on Instagram.
