Sihle Maseko watched the drummer at his church week after week, before he decided to give drumming a go himself, only thing is, he didn’t have a drum kit.
Not put off by his lack of instruments, Sihle, only 10-years-old, made his own kit using buckets, barrels, and tools from his backyard.
Once the kit was set up and Sihle played the drums, the videos that were posted on Facebook and social media attracted millions of viewers and fans.
His mother, Bontle Setshedi couldn’t be prouder. Setshedi told the Sunday Times that at first she was annoyed that Sihle has made his own drum kit, but when she heard him play, that changed. “I was just so emotional. I realised that God had given him a gift,” she said. “He was just so good. I’m still emotional now when I see what people are saying about him on Facebook.”
His family has been so encouraged by the response he has got on social media, that Sihle’s uncle, Itumeleng Setshedi bought him a proper drum kit on which to develop his talents.
“I saw him using those tin drums and I realised he had a lot of potential. I felt I had to buy him new drums,” his uncle said. “It was definitely worth it, not just because it is what Sihle wanted, but also because he is so dedicated.”
