Residents of Ga-Mothapo outside Polokwane in Limpopo have accused the police of letting them down in the fight against crime.
This was highlighted during a police Imbizo at Nobody village.
The area has been identified as a hotspot for crimes such as rape, house breaking and business robbery.
Some of the residents have accused the police of taking bribes.
“These boys who smoke nyaope are bribing the police. That is why they are arrested and released immediately. How can we trust the police if this is what they are doing? We have so many cases of theft at schools, but none of them have been finalised. But we are being blamed when we take the law into our own hands.”
Meanwhile, in an unrelated story Limpopo police say they have intensified investigations into a spate of crimes at the University of Limpopo in Mankweng.
Two students were raped while another has been kidnapped at off-campus residences.
The suspects are allegedly known.
Acting Provincial Commissioner Christinah Morakaladi says she can’t divulge more information at this stage.
“The investigations are still on, and a provincial task team has been established. Definitely, the development is there, but one thing for sure, the investigation is there currently and it’s promising. We are still appealing to the community to come forward to assist the police. There is a huge visibility of the police around.”
