Jacques Smalle: SAPS To Make All Resources Available To Track Down Perpetrators Attacking Farms

Two farm assaults in the Waterberg locale in just 48 hours has left Democratic Alliance (DA) pioneer in Limpopo, Jacques Smalle, calling for more to be done.

According to Smalle, farm manager Jasper von Clause was fatally shot on Wednesday. His partner and son were also wounded during the same attack at Dale Farm just outside Lephalale.

The second attack took place on Thursday evening between Roedtan and Mookgopong. Ockie Breedt Jnr was stabbed eight times by two unknown attackers who are currently still at large.

Breedt is in a stable condition in hospital.

Smalle is now calling on the South African Police Sevice (SAPS) to make “all resources at their disposal” available to track down and arrest the perpetrators.

“Limpopo rural communities – farmers as well as farm workers – are increasingly at risk as the SAPS have limited personnel and resources to prevent violent crime in secluded and vast rural areas.”

“We further call on all leaders of society to condemn attacks such as these and refrain from using inflammatory language that may incite violence, especially during the debates surrounding land and land reform.”

The party are also calling for “sober leadership” to deal with the issues around rural safety as well as land.

Earlier this week, AfriForum’s head of security claimed that 109 farm attacks have already taken place in 2018, 100 days into the calendar year.

Ian Cameron was speaking on the same day AfriForum launched their international campaign to present their views on land expropriation to the rest of the world. The group has vowed to do everything they can to discredit the proposals.

With the concerns of farmers seeming to spread, what can authorities and government do to ensure everyone is kept safe? Right now, no solution seems to be in sight.
