How Zondo Findings Could Cost the Party Election Support: Lindiwe Zulu

Lindiwe Zulu, the Small Business Development Minister, has said corruption allegations against ANC leaders coming out of the Zondo Commision could cost the party votes in the upcoming elections.

Zulu made the comments at a press conference yesterday, where she and several ANC bigwigs reported the outcomes of the party’s recent lekgotla.

Her comments come after several days of explosive testimony from former Bosasa executive Angelo Agrizzi. Agrizzi has told the Zondo Commision of how Bosasa paid government officials bribes in exchange for tenders and protection from prosecution.

The bribes allegedly continued over years. Agrizzi implicated several major ANC figures, including Nomvula Mokonyane, several members of parliament and former president Jacob Zuma.

Zulu said that she thought the corruption allegations might cost the ANC some support, but she was confident that the party could turn itself around and do some damage control. She said that the party was dedicated to strengthening government institutions.

ANC secretary-general Ace Magashule echoed some of Zulu’s concerns, but said that the party was not in a hurry to take disciplinary action against members who have been accused of corruption. He said that while they were taking the Zondo Commision testimony seriously, it was not a court of law. He stressed that the ANC would view all implicated members as innocent until proven guilty.
