How To Find Your Passion

If the highlight of your work week is the weekend, perhaps it is time to switch to something you love

It is only Monday and your mind is already on the upcoming weekend. You drag yourself out of bed for five days, only to sit in your office waiting for the clock to let you know when it is time to go home. If you hate your job and are thinking of making a change, it may be the time to try and find something that you are passionate about.

There is evidence to suggest that happy people are more productive. According to Fast Company, researchers at the University of Warwick found that happiness led to a 12% spike in productivity, while their unhappy counterparts proved 10% less productive.

Most people are under the impression that work always has to be gruelling and unpleasant and spend a lot of time doing work they do not enjoy to save money.

The late Scott Dinsmore, founder of Live Your Legend, a career platform that inspires people to do work they believe in, said people need to let go of the idea that they need to wait until they are older before they can work on what they love.

“Taking jobs to fill up your resume is like saving up sex for old age,” he said.

Fear has a way of stopping people from trying to venture out to live their dreams:

“We do have a tendency to stay in bad situations and it’s only when things get extreme, often either through fear or anxiety, that we admit to ourselves that things are not working for us anymore,” says Joburg-based life coach Judy Kilpin.

Not everyone is lucky enough to have the time and space to do what they want in life. Many people are stuck doing the work they do in order to survive. If you are fortunate enough to be able to make the changes in your life that will make you more satisfied, The Muse, an online career platform, has a number of tips on how to figure out what job will give you joy.

1.Remember What You Loved as a Child

This will help you identify what you wanted to do before fear and other people’s expectations got in the way of your dreams. It will help you find the direction you should be heading in.

2.Think of What You Enjoy That You Also Do Well

As an adult, there are things that you are interested in and enjoy doing. If you are really passionate about something, the challenges will likely inspire you to try harder and not give up on your dreams. As the saying goes, choose something you love and you will never have to work a day in your life.

3.Identify your Professional Hero

Be on the lookout for someone who is doing what you dream about. Visualising where you want to go and finding real life examples will help you realise your dreams.

 4.Leverage Social Media

Try and network with people who are doing what you would like to do and find out more information on how they did it. Read blogs from like-minded individuals, look for resources that will help you educate yourself about what it takes to get to where you need to be.

5.Just do it

The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step. If you want to try do something else, don’t let a lack of resources or time stop you from taking steps towards your dream. Small though they may be, you are still making the change that will lead you to where you dream of being.
