Fans Celebrate Phat Joe’s Return To Radio

Nearly three weeks after being unscheduled until further notice for making homophobic comments during his “love breakfast” show on Radio 2000, DJ Majota “Phat Joe” Kambule is back on air.

Fans immediately took to Twitter to rejoice at hearing his voice on the airwaves.

Phat Joe’s return was not without an apology however, as Joe had to apologize for allegedly saying: “I don’t understand why they (gays) can’t accept that it’s difficult for most people to accept their lifestyle.”

These alleged comments were shared on social media by Twitter user @_wordperfect, who added that Joe told listeners how “disgusted” he was to be “hit on by a gay” man and how “disgusting” he thinks it is when gay men are “flamboyant like women”.

Those who were tuned in to hear this apology tweeted their thoughts about it.

Why is Phat Joe back on the airwaves? Has he made any apology to the LGBTI community or are we still at risk of him rallying up other homophobes on air? @Radio2000ZA7:33 AM – Jul 29, 2019Twitter Ads info and privacySee Muzi Mthembu’s other Tweets

It was reported that in response to a complaint lodged with the BCCSA, the SABC said that despite Joe apologising to a listener and sharing his own experiences, they felt the matter could have been dealt with better and took action against Joe.

Following a promise made in their statement announcing Joe’s suspension, the SABC is reported to have held workshops for staff to retrain them on the BCCSA Code, the Broadcast Act and SABC editorial policies.
