A Durban events organiser claims that Afrotainment boss DJ Tira stole his idea.

Floyd Gcingca from The West Is Alive Events and Management Projects claims that the new format of DJ Tira’s Gumba Fest – Ulundi Edition, which kicked off in KZN during the Carling Black Label final between Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs last weekend, was actually his idea.

Gcingca said he had approached Tira in March this year to collaborate on entertainment events centered around the popular Soweto soccer derbies

He said his idea included a pre-party the night before the game, a “Legends Cup” match involving locals, a live screening of the derby and a chill session the following day.

He claimed that Tira’s event resembled the idea he proposed to him.

“The only thing which made it different was the Boot Camp with Somizi.

“The initial purpose was to create a hype around the Soweto derby in Joburg while including [KZN] supporters through the event and that’s exactly what Tira did; he stole my idea,” said Gcingca.

“Although Gumba Fest is a well-known annual event, Tira just used Gumba Fest – The Ulundi Edition as a front.”

Gumba Fest is Tira’s most popular music event staged annually in October.

In e-mails between the two seen by Sunday World, Gcingca writes: “Kindly note that the reason I approached you about the concept I had is simply because I highly honour, respect your workmanship and it was always my vision as a businessman to work with you and I will not rest until that vision is realised.”

Gcingca claims that Tira initially loved the idea, but after a series of meetings Tira said he was too busy.

An e-mail from the DJ reads: “I’m sorry my brother my year is just too hectic I won’t have time to work on this project.”

When called for comment Tira said “I will rather not comment,” but confirmed interacting with Gcingca. The poster used for Tira’s gig in Ulundi, a northern KZN town, does advertise a pre-party, a Legacy Cup, boot camp and a “chillas”
