It has been reported that Herman Mashaba’s Cleanup Johannesburg agenda has reached its next phase. The Mayor is set to deport all illegal migrants in the megacity. The Mayor has always specified that his cleanup Johannesburg agenda would remove illegal and undocumented foreigners in order to re-order the central business district and recover city buildings that have been hijacked.

June 2017 Facts  From what we learnt, Mayor Mashaba has approached the court to get the necessary permits that would enable him to deport undocumented foreigners. It is said that the Mayor decided to approach the court after his requests for the Home Affair department to regulate immigration failed to yield any useful outcome. Currently, the Mayor’s lawyers are working towards instituting a high court application against the new Minister of Home Affairs, Ayandla Dlodlo.

Confirming this move, the Mayor affirmed that it’s the right thing to do. He reportedly said: “We’re under chaos now, people are running all over the show with no documentation, so I want to bring back the rule of law. “Four to five months down the line, I’m going to have an issue, so I’m dealing with this up front.” According to the Mayor, all those occupying city buildings would be evicted.

Nonetheless, he affirmed that it’s his duty to provide alternative accommodations for only South Africans. , Tracks Citizens Leaving For More Than 3 Months Not long past, the former Minister, Professor Hlengiwe Mkhize, announced the closure of the Zimbabwean Special Permit (ZSP) and the beginning of new permit called –Zimbabwean Exemption Permit (ZEP).

The following were listed as the conditions of the new Zimbabwean Exemption Permit: Entitles the holder to work/ study and/or conduct business. Does not entitle the holder the right to apply for permanent residence irrespective of the period of stay in the Republic of South Africa.

Will not be renewable/extendable. Does not allow a holder to change conditions of his/her permit while in South Africa. ZSP permit holders who wish to convert their status to any other mainstream visa should apply timeously for such visa from within SA provided they meet all the requirements for that visa. A ZSP applicant will be allowed to travel using the ZEP receipt and the expired ZSP permit until such time as the ZEP permit is issued, without being declared undesirable.
