Checkout South Africa’s Only Rep At The World Cup

Bafana may not be en route to the World Cup in Russia, yet there is one South African that will represent the country at the World Cup.

Zakhele Siwela, who has become known for his high standards as an official in the Premier Soccer League, has been chosen by FIFA as one of the associates for the event, and is the main South African to have made the cut.

In total, 16 referees and assistants have been selected from Africa, and Siwela will be flying the flag high for Mzansi when he takes to the field in the tournament for the first time.

Siwela was rewarded for his efforts domestically in 2016 when he was named as the PSL’s Assistant Referee of the Year, and being called up to the World Cup can now be added to his list of achievements.

The 35-year-old is due to to form a partnership with referee, Janny Sikazwe of Zambia, and Angolan first assistant, Jerson dos Santos.

The tournament gets underway on June 14th in Moscow, although it is as yet unknown which games Siwela will be taking part in.
