There will be no Ballon d’Or 2020 winners announced this year due to the ongoing impact of the coronavirus pandemic on the world game.
Awarded by France Football magazine, the Ballon d’Or has been given out every year since Stanley Matthews won the first one in 1956. Lionel Messi has won it a record six times — one more than longtime rival Cristiano Ronaldo.
This year will mark the first time since its founding that football’s most coveted individual prize will not be handed out.
Because the game’s rules have been modified during the pandemic, the award itself was impacted, while the postponement of both the European Championship and Copa America has seen those select few playing in the Champions League handed a significant advantage to impress.
