Andile Lungisa Opts To Remain In Jail Despite Being Granted R10,000 Bail

Nelson Mandela Bay ANC politician, Andile Lungisa, has opted to remain in jail despite being granted bail of R10 000 in the Grahamstown High Court in Makhanda.

This came as a surprise to his supporters and the media who were waiting outside of the North End prison.

Lungisa applied for bail while awaiting a decision for his application in the Constitutional Court for leave to appeal his two-year prison sentence for assault.

He was convicted of hitting Democratic Alliance (DA) Councillor Ryno Kayser over the head with a glass jug during a Council Meeting in 2016.

Lungisa’s brother, Ayongezwa Lungisa, says they had the funds for his release, but his politician sibling opted to complete the programmes he has started in prison.

“What I can say is that when we came here as a family, we came with money, because already when we left Grahamstown we were able to anticipate that the money could be more or less R10 000 to R15 000 as bail. We had that money.

“But when we arrived in Port Elizabeth, we were called by his legal team for a brief interaction where they indicated that they got instruction from him that he requests that he be given time to conclude all the programs he has started. Those programs didn’t start now in 2020. In 2018, when he would’ve served 15 days here, he would’ve started those programs and he wants to finish them as part of showing to the public that where courts take decisions, where such decisions are not changed, he is willing to abide by such decisions.”
