United Democratic Movement (UDM) leader Bantu Holomisa says the people of the country have lost confidence in the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC).
Holomisa was speaking at an anti-corruption lecture held at the Tlokwe Local Municipality based in Potchefstroom in North West.
Speakers said the IEC is wasting tax payer’s money by appealing the recent constitutional court decision.
This after the court ruled that they should include the addresses of voters on the voter’s role.
Holomisa says, “The independence of the IEC in general is questionable, given that it’s manned almost by all former members of the African national Congress (ANC). As long as the Commissioners are appointed by the majority party in Parliament we will never have an independent IEC.”
Meanwhile, opposition parties in the municipality have called on the UDM to raise its issues in Parliament.
Congress of the People provincial spokesperson, Thabang Maduna and Independent candidate David Kham say Parliament is the appropriate platform for such issues.
