T-Systems has handed 400 metre runner Wayde van Niekerk with a R1 million gift, “in celebration of his spectacular performance at the 2016 Rio Olympics.
Van Niekerk touched down at OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg on Wednesday, with sponsor Audi, waiting to to hand over a brand new R8 V10 Plus, Wheels24reported.
The global superstar, who broke Michael Johnson’s 400 metre record at the Olympics last month, was announced as an Audi ambassador in August.
Wheels24 noted that Audi SA has loaned the vehicle to van Niekerk for a year, ‘with the option of extending, and during that time he will also have access to other Audi Sport models, such as the RS6 and RS7, when extra luggage space is required’.
ICT services provider, T-Systems, said its partnership with the athlete began before the Olympics in Rio. “The similarities between Wayde’s disruptive approach to athletics, and our disruptive approach to business transformation, have always been clearly evident,” said Mpumi Nhlapo, head of T-Systems South Africa’s marketing.
Nhlapo said of the R1 million gift: “It’s our gesture of thanks, honouring Wayde for the way he’s inspired millions of South Africans to believe in their own dreams and chase after success.”
“Wayde’s achievements reflect our vision to change the established rules of how businesses operate. We’re committed to helping our clients achieve success that they never thought were possible – in the same way that the pundits never thought it was possible for someone to smash the world record from lane 8.”
